    Driving through a leafy glade to Kesgrave Hall on the outskirts of Ipswich and catching a glimpse of this imposing Georgian mansion in all its glory, nestling in a dell surrounded by manicured lawns and towering leafy trees, one could be forgiven that it calls for ‘best bib‘n’tucker’.

    Essex pride

    Stalwart of the county pub scene, season went to lunch at the Cricketers in Clavering on the North-West Essex/Herts borders with owners Trevor and Sally Oliver. Essex born and bred, the licensed trade runs in Trevor’s veins, having grown up with his father being a landlord. Two other brothers also have their own pubs, including the old family hostelry, the well known Plough and Sail at Paglesham on the river Roach, celebrating 40 years in the Oliver family.

    Glyn Williams seeks out one of Cambridgeshire’s hidden riverside gems. As remote spots go, one wouldn’t have thought the Anchor at Sutton Gault, just seven miles or so drive from the city of Ely or less as the crow flies would be hard to find. But as Paddy Burt the Daily Telegraph’s esteemed travel writer pointed out, ‘Sutton Gault in Fen country is a village so tiny they forgot to put it on the map’.

    Glyn Williams meets celebrated chef Anton Edelmann at his new restaurant Anton’s close to Stansted Airport in North Essex. One would have thought after a long very successful career as Executive Chef de Cuisine at the famous Savoy Hotel on the Strand in charge of a 75 strong brigade of chefs that Anton would want to take it easy.
