For a good barbecue you need to buy great local meat, try one of these proper butchers, just six of our many favourites in the region.

John Hutton of Earl Soham
, Suffolk
Winner of the 2007 Great Suffolk Sausage Competition, John’s lovely intimate shop is a hive of activity, regulars and well sourced produce, including locally grazed meat.

Hepburns of Mountnessing, Essex
Part of the estimable Q Guild, the sign for quality butchery, the lucky shoppers in South Essex have got a gem. Excellent game in season too.

Creasey’s of Peasenhall, Suffolk
A charming shop in a bucolic village, Creasey’s has close family links to Clarke’s in Bramfield, so they can tap into the best farms around.

Walsingham Farm Shop, Norfolk
Set up by a partnership of local farmers, this distinctly special place is worth a visit, not just for James Woodhouse’s tender water meadow beef from Hill House Farm up the road.
Guild Street, Walsingham

Neave’s of Debenham, Suffolk
A large village butchers with a whole counter dedicated to summer barbecuing, including well hung steaks and local Old Spot pork.

Edge & Son of Harling, Norfolk
With two mid Norfolk shops (another at 38 King Street, Thetford) and 50 years trading across three generations, Edge and Son even educate trainees in their own butchery school, such is their pride in the old traditional skills.
